Colombia, December 1988.
A woman from a remote farming village makes a daylong trek to a hospital and gives birth to identical twin boys. One of them is very sick and needs care the hospital can't give. While she recovers, a relative takes him six hours away, to a hospital in Bogotá.
In that Bogotá hospital, a city seamstress has just given birth to identical twin boys of her own. It is close to Christmas. The staff are tired and overworked.
