Chiune Sugihara died in Kamakura on July 31, 1986. He was 86.
On October 10, 2000, 60 years after Kaunas, Japan's foreign minister, Yohei Kono, unveiled a plaque in his honor and gave a speech praising what he had done.
Today, by various estimates, between 40,000 and 100,000 people are descendants of those he saved.
"Please forgive me," he had said as his train pulled away. "I cannot write anymore."
He had written enough.
