After Lithuania, Sugihara was posted to Prague, then to Bucharest. When Soviet troops entered Romania in 1944, they held him and his family in a camp for 18 months.
After they returned to Japan, in 1947, the Foreign Ministry asked him to resign. Officially, it was downsizing. His wife believed it was because of what he had done in Lithuania.
The man who had saved thousands took odd jobs. From 1960 to 1975, he worked for a Japanese trading company in Moscow.
