Nassau, the Bahamas. November 23, 1984.
Feeney sat down with his then wife, Danielle, and his lawyer, Harvey Dale. He signed a stack of documents.
With those signatures, he handed over his cash, his businesses and his shares, including his 38.75% stake in Duty Free Shoppers. All of it went to a charitable foundation, now called Atlantic Philanthropies.
Nobody was told. Feeney kept running the businesses, so everyone, including Forbes, went on thinking he was a billionaire. In fact, by 1988 he was worth less than $5 million.
