The Journey Home

The survivors received medical care, and the Japanese navy sent the warship Yaeyama to help with their recovery and care. The government then decided to send the men home. In October 1890, the warships Hiei and Kongo departed with all 69 survivors aboard. They reached Istanbul in January 1891, and the sailors were welcomed home. In Japan, the disaster and the rescue drew wide attention, and donations were collected for the victims and their families.
