Sacks, Coffins and Ambulances

Some children left the ghetto hidden in sacks or toolboxes. Some rode out in carts, in ambulances, even in coffins.

Others were led out through a church, or through an old courthouse that stood on the ghetto's edge.

Once outside, each child got forged papers and a new Christian name. Social workers from Irena's own department helped forge the documents.

It worked. Child by child, about 2,500 of them made it out.

But she kept one thing that could destroy them all: their real names.
