The letter opened, "My darling, lovable, alluring, Bernadean." Further into it, Bill had written that he considered himself the luckiest guy in the world because of her — words from a young soldier who had no idea, at the time, whether he'd survive to say them to her in person. Bill cried reading it. Missing her, he said, is a heartache that never really goes away.
