A Ski Trip, Cancelled

December 1938.

Nicholas Winton was 29, a stockbroker in London, and he was about to leave on a skiing holiday. Then a friend, Martin Blake, asked him to cancel it and come to Prague instead.

Czechoslovakia was in crisis. Hitler's troops had taken over the Sudetenland, the country's border region, and more than 150,000 refugees were living in makeshift camps.

Winton went and saw the camps for himself. He came home with one goal: get the children out.

He had no organization behind him. So he made one up.
