A shelter worker named Joe Warzycha had an idea. Ruby, he thought, might make a good police dog.
The shelter reached out to the Rhode Island State Police. They agreed to give Ruby a second chance, and a sergeant came to pick her up before time ran out. She would be tried as a search and rescue dog, the kind trained to track down missing people.
A trooper named Dan O'Neil was picked to be her handler.
