A Story Too Complicated for a Novel

The Eighth Day of the Cicada, the novel this story resembles, is fiction — and it was never based on Kamiyah Mobley's case at all; its author drew on a very different, unrelated incident from 1993. Real life, as it turned out, didn't need the borrowed plot. It produced something a novel might not have dared to end the way it did: a young woman who found her stolen past, and chose to keep every part of it — the family she was born into, and the woman who raised her.
Some family stories are stranger than fiction. Here's another one that proves it.
