33 Men, 700 Meters Down, and 17 Days of Silence

On the evening of October 13, 2010, shift foreman Luis Urzúa emerged from a steel capsule in Chile's Atacama Desert. He was the last of 33 miners to be raised from 700 meters (about 2,300 feet) underground, 69 days after a rock fall sealed them in. For the first 17 of those days, the men had no contact with the surface at all. How do 33 men last that long in the dark, on food meant for two or three days?
