A Steel Phoenix, 54 Centimeters Wide

The Chilean Navy shipyard ASMAR built three steel capsules named Fénix, or Phoenix, with design input from NASA. The one used for the rescue, Fénix 2, was about 54 centimeters (21 inches) wide. It had retractable wheels, an oxygen supply, lighting, video and voice links, a reinforced roof against falling rock, and an escape hatch that let a rider lower himself back down if the capsule stuck.
