A Probe Reached Their Level and Found No Sign of Life

A second collapse on August 7 ended attempts to reach the men through the mine's existing shafts. Rescuers turned to drilling narrow boreholes, about 16 centimeters wide, hoping to hit a space the miners could use. The mine's maps were out of date, and several boreholes drifted off target. On August 19, one probe reached the area where the men were believed to be. It found no sign of life.
