In March 1985, the Nevada Supreme Court reversed the conviction: the jury should have been allowed to hear that witness. Woods was retried that same year. In November 1985, a second jury convicted her, and she was again sentenced to life without parole. The high court upheld that verdict in 1988. Woods stayed in prison through the 1990s and 2000s, maintaining her innocence and recanting the confession. The Marlboro butt stayed in storage.
