During a practice match, a scrum collapsed. Sugita did not get up. He was rushed to hospital with injuries to the vertebrae and spinal cord in his neck, unable to move anything below it. He was 19. Doctors told him he would never walk again. The Fuji climb was called off. The coach promised him that when he recovered, they would all go together.
