Sugita spent about a year in hospital. His teammates kept visiting, telling him that once he could walk, they would climb Fuji with him. He lashed out at the people who came, then hated himself for it. Eventually he cut off contact with the rugby club altogether. The people who had promised him a mountain no longer heard from him.
